Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Medical Director and Department Manager, the Respiratory T! herapist is responsible for providing Respiratory Care Services in accordance with specific physicianâs orders and department policies and procedures.
Essential Duties:
Maintains knowledge of the various methods of oxygen delivery, including the necessary equipment. Evaluates possible side effects to oxygen delivery.
Conducts daily oxygen rounds.
Administers respiratory therapy treatments, understands the purpose of each and the possible side effects associated with each.
Able to assess patient pain that may interfere with optimal level of function or participation in treatment.
Makes appropriate contact for intervention.
Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning.
Maintains certification in endotracheal intubation and performs task when necessary.
Responds to all cardio-p! ulmonary arrests.
Assists physician in performing fib! eroptic bronchoscopies; maintains and stocks the supply cart.
Processes the scope after use.
Performs arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis, and understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure.
Performs maintenance Quality Control analysis and documentation for ABG analyzers.
Documents all pertinent data on the patientâs medical record following completion of any service.
Maintains a thorough knowledge of all departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks and their proper usage.
Performs stat EKGs during off-hours (no EKG tech available).
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the differences in techniques and treatment modalities as performed on patients of varying ages, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of oxygen concentrations and hazards, an! d medication doses as they relate to patients of varying ages, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
Confers with physician for any departures from the normal standards, and bases action on the patientâs individual response and needs.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently.
Checks and changes âEâ cylinders as needed.
Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs of a patient and evaluates effectiveness of learning; patientâs family is included in teaching as appropriate.
Demonstrates ability to assess patient, his/her need, and ability to tolerate treatment and reassessment for response to treatmen! t.
Attends education inservice programs to maintain profession! al competency.
Obtains appropriate hospital-specific education and training.
Responds to all fires and assumes responsibility for the medical gas zone valves.
Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma required.
Graduate of accredited Respiratory Therapy School.
Experience:
Minimum one year clinical respiratory experience required.

License/Certification:
NJ State Licensed by Board of Respiratory Care
Credentialed by the NBRC
Neonatal Resusitation Provider (NRP) certification within 6 months of hire/transfer into position
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
